Infertility is the body’s inability to conceive. It could be due to factors either in the male or female, or both. This is usually determined after a period of 12 months of trying to fall pregnant. The reason for this time frame is because the body needs to return to its normal natural state once a woman stops using contraceptive methods. If after a 12 month period of trying to conceive pregnancy has not occurred then there may be factors that are halting the conception process. In such a case, you need to consult a fertility doctor.

Infertility can occur in any one, and there are many reasons why you or your partner may be infertile. Depending on your diagnosis there could be possible solutions that could help you overcome infertility and assist you to conceive.

There are a number of different treatments available that your fertility doctor could recommend. Here are a few of them.

ICSI – Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection treats male infertility. Only one sperm is needed for this treatment. That one sperm is used and injected directly into the egg. This treatment is viable for couples where low or immobile sperm is an issue.

IUI – Intra Uterine Insemination is the process of collection semen where after it is inserted directly into the cervical canal or uterine cavity. It is also known as artificial insemination and the sperm may be from the male partner or a sperm donor. It is an option for those couples where sperm motility is bad or there is a low sperm count.

Ovulation Induction – this is a method where a woman is given ovulation induction medications which are commonly known as fertility drugs. It is used to stimulate the follicles in the ovaries which produce multiple eggs in one cycle. It can also be used to control the time that the eggs are released or when you ovulate.

IVF – In Vitro Fertilisation takes place in the laboratory and is the process of uniting the sperm and the egg. The embryos are then transferred into the uterus so that pregnancy can commence. IVF is done in conjunction with fertility drugs to manage the timing of conception and to increase the chances of pregnancy.

There are other fertility treatments available such as Pre-Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), Assisted Hatching, In Vitro Maturation (IVM), Egg Freezing, Sperm Washing, Cryopreservation, and Blastocyst Culture.
