Infertility: Is IVF an Option for Me?

Finding out that you may have infertility issues can be a hard pill to swallow. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel for couples who want to have a baby. Your fertility doctor will assess the cause of your infertility and diagnose it accordingly. In certain cases, IVF, or In-Vitro Fertilisation, may be an option for you. IVF is the process of uniting the egg and the sperm in the laboratory then the embryos are transferred into the uterus. This is done through the cervix so that pregnancy is able to begin.

There are certain factors that make you a viable candidate for IVF.

If the woman’s fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged, this can cause tubal problems. This will make it difficult for the egg to be fertilized or for the embryo to travel to the uterus. If the embryo cannot reach the uterus, IVF may be considered.

In terms of male infertility, factors that play a role include a low sperm count, problems with the function of the sperm, or low motility of the sperm which can inhibit the sperm from fertilizing the egg on its own. IVF will allow the sperm to reach the egg within a controlled and monitored environment.

Severe Endometriosis could affect both the fertilization of the egg as well as the implantation of the embryo in the uterus. In such a severe case, the fertility doctor may recommend IVF.

If the woman has ovarian issues that prevent the release or production of the eggs, it may be viable to remove the eggs for an IVF treatment.

The shape of the uterus may also affect fertility. If it is an abnormal shape it may be difficult for pregnancy to occur normally. Fibroid tumours also cause infertility in women.

There are cases where infertility in men or women is unidentifiable. If, after a number of assessments, the cause of infertility is unknown, then the fertility doctor could recommend an IVF treatment.
