Following a 7-year long battle to get medical schemes to pay for infertility treatment, Infertility Awareness Association of South Africa (IFAASA) and Southern African Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG) have triumphed over South Africa’s largest Medical Scheme – Discovery Health.
On the 1st of October 2020, IFAASA released a statement confirming that Discovery intended to introduce an infertility and assisted reproductive therapy benefit for 2021. This cover, is however, subject to certain eligibility criteria and will only be available to members on specific plans.
Infertility is considered a disease by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is listed as a Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) in the Medical Schemes Act, No. 131 of 1998. Despite this, medical aid schemes have persistently refused to provide cover for fertility treatment. BioART Fertility centre welcomes this announcement and believes that this is indeed a step in the right direction. We envisage that other medical schemes are likely to follow suite in this regard.
Eligibility Criteria: Female members on the Executive and Comprehensive Plans who are between the ages of 25 and 42 years, will have access to the benefit.
Benefits: Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intra-uterine insemination (IUI), frozen embryo transfer (FET), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
Qualifying members will have cover for up to two cycles of ART.
Cover will be up to 75% of the Discovery Health Rate (DHR), with an overall limit of R110 000 per person per year.
The benefit will only be accessible at SASREG accredited clinics/facilities.
