The BioART clinic offers you cutting-edge technology and over 30 years of experience. Our goal is to provide you with the very best chance at a successful pregnancy and delivery.

What is IVF?

IVF is a widely used assisted reproductive technology that involves combining an egg and sperm outside the body in a lab. After fertilisation, one or more embryos are placed into the uterus with the hope of achieving a successful pregnancy.

IVF can help overcome a variety of fertility issues, such as blocked fallopian tubes, male infertility or unexplained infertility. The process involves multiple steps, each designed to increase the chances of conception.

Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation

The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation. This step involves hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Our fertility experts carefully monitor the development of the eggs through blood tests and ultrasounds.

This important phase ensures we retrieve as many healthy eggs as possible, improving your chances of successful fertilisation.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs have matured, they are retrieved from the ovaries in a quick, minimally invasive procedure. This is typically done under sedation, so the process is comfortable and stress-free.

Our IVF doctors use highly skilled techniques and advanced technology to carefully and accurately retrieve the mature eggs from the ovaries. They use ultrasound guidance to carefully locate and access the follicles. By using this method, they can ensure they retrieve the eggs without damaging the surrounding tissues or causing any harm to the ovaries.

The specialists also carefully determine the precise timing for the egg retrieval, which maximises the chances of collecting healthy eggs that are suitable for fertilisation.

Step 3: Fertilisation

In the laboratory, the eggs are combined with sperm from either the partner or a donor. We use the most advanced techniques available, such as ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), which involves directly injecting a single sperm into an egg to increase the chances of fertilisation.

Our IVF specialists monitor the fertilised eggs very closely, ensuring they are developing as they should.

Step 4: Embryo Culture and Selection

After fertilisation, the embryos are placed in a special incubator that mimics the conditions of a woman’s body. They are monitored for quality and development for several days.

Our embryologists use advanced technology to select the best embryos for transfer, considering factors like cell division and morphology. We may also recommend genetic testing, such as Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), to ensure the embryos are healthy.

Our team approaches the creation of embryos with dignity, considering it a crucial and sacred step in the potential creation of life.

Step 5: Embryo Transfer

Once the embryos have reached the appropriate stage, one or more of the best-quality embryos are selected for transfer into the uterus. This is a simple, painless procedure that requires no incisions or anaesthesia.

The non-selected embryos can be frozen for future use, be offered for donation to other couples who cannot produce their own eggs, as well as other options.

Step 6: Pregnancy Test and Follow-Up

After the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted about two weeks later to determine whether the procedure has been successful. If successful, we will continue to monitor your pregnancy with ultrasounds and blood tests to ensure that everything is progressing as it should.

Throughout the entire journey, we are not only focused on achieving pregnancy – we are focused on you. Take the first step towards building your family with South Africa’s renowned BioART Fertility Clinic.
