Female Reproductive System

The female reproductive system is information about women’s sexuality and fertility. It is also composed of several organs such as your hormones, ovaries, cervix, vagina, uterus and fallopian tubes. The structure of these organs is vital to a healthy functioning reproductive system.

Ovulation

An egg lives 12-24 hours after leaving the ovaryNormally only one egg is released each time of ovulation. Ovulation can be affected by stress, illness or disruption of normal routines

Menstrual Cycle

The length of the menstrual cycle can vary from a short cycle of only 21 days to a long cycle of 40 days. The length of the cycle is calculated by counting the first day of bleeding as day 1 and then counting until the very last day before the next bleed (period).

Surgical / Diagnostic Procedures

The cervix is the neck of the womb, and plays an important part in reproduction. The cervix produces mucus which prevent bacteria from ascending up the genital tract and infecting the uterus and fallopian tubes.

FAQs

What is the most successful assisted reproductive therapy (ART)?

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) is currently the most successful ART. It involves fertilising eggs with sperm in a laboratory and transferring the resulting embryo into the uterus. Success depends on age, egg and sperm quality, underlying conditions, and lab expertise. Advanced techniques like ICSI, PGT, or frozen embryo transfer may improve outcomes in certain cases.

How much does a sperm test cost?

A basic semen analysis costs approximately R1,800, though prices vary between clinics and laboratories. Additional tests may be recommended depending on the individual situation.

Can stress cause infertility?

Stress alone does not directly cause infertility, but high levels of stress can affect hormones, ovulation, and menstrual cycles. In men, it may impact sperm quality. Managing stress through lifestyle changes or counselling can support reproductive health.

Are there any warning signs of infertility?

Infertility often has no obvious symptoms, but some signs may suggest a problem:

  • Women: irregular or absent periods, very heavy or light periods, painful periods, pelvic pain, or repeated miscarriages
  • Men: low sperm count, poor sperm motility, ejaculation problems, or testicular swelling/lumps

If pregnancy has not occurred after 12 months of regular, unprotected sex (or 6 months if over 35), consult a fertility specialist.
